Cisco VPN Installation Instructions


Step 1:

Obtaining a VPN Access Account.

  1. If you are a UMC employee, staff, faculty or student, skip to Item 5: below.
  2. If you are not an employee of UMMC and have not already signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement, you will need to download a copy, fill it out, and return it to your UMC Advocate/Sponsor. They will be solely responsible for maintaining your documentation as well as submitting an Electronic Information Resource Request to the UMC Information Systems Help Desk. They are also responsible for the submission of the request to the Department of Human Resources to obtain an Identification Number for you if one has not already been obtained. Once received, the Help Desk will log their request and build your account with all the requested resources. Your Sponsor/Advocate will be contacted once this has been completed. You will be contacted via the email address you supply with your account application information.
  3. Information furnished for Non-UMC employee, staff, faculty or student applicants will be submitted to our Human Resources department via this web site. Be prepared to provide the following information to your sponsor/advocate:
    1. Full Name, Unique Company ID number or last 4 of SSN, Organization Title, Full Organization Name, Company Phone # and extension, UMC Room #(if working on campus), full off-campus email address
  4. Sponsor/Advocate use only: Please click here to submit information to HR department.
  5. If you are a UMC employee, staff, or faculty member, and wish to have a VPN account, please submit an Information Resource Request [found here]. Note that your request must be approved by your supervisor/manager to be granted access to VPN.


Step 2:

Installing the Cisco VPN client software and configuration file(Vista users, skip to Step 3)

Here are the instructions to install Cisco's VPN client with UMC's configuration file on your computer at your remote location:

  1. Download one of the following VPN clients and also the UMMC.pcf file and save them to "My Documents".
      Cisco VPN client Win2K/XP/VISTA install
      Cisco VPN client Macintosh install

      UMC's Cisco VPN configuration File
    Install the Cisco VPN client. Double click on the VPN client you downloaded. It will ask a directory to unzip to. I selected "My Documents" and appended the directory "VPN_Install" to it.
    Go to the directory created by step 2 and double click on the "vpnclient_setup" icon.
    Click on "Next", then click on the "I Accept this license agreement" button and then click "Next".
    For the location, leave the default and click on "Next".
    Click on "Next" to begin the install.
    Click on the "Finish" button when it appears.
    Click on the "Yes" button to reboot your PC.
    After reboot, a new icon will appear on your desktop called "VPN Client", double click on it.
    The window might be minimized in the tray, just double click on it to display the window.
    Click on the "Import Icon" toolbar icon, a file selection will come up. Go to "My Documents" and select "UMMC.pcf" then click open.
    Click on the "OK" button that displays next.
  2. Cisco VPN is installed.

Step 4:
Once the Cisco VPN is installed, you should be able to login with your Username and Password. This is the same as your Active Directory password(Novell). Go to our internal VPN page by following this link: vpn.umsmed.edu
